How Semester Grades Work At Palm Beach County Schools

You might be confused by how semester grades are calculated if you're a high school student at one of the Palm Beach County Schools (Spanish River, Boca Raton High, Olympic Heights, West Boca High, etc.), and you're not alone. The grading system is very confusing and unintuitive. For example, if you get an A first quarter and an A second quarter, you only need a C on your semester exam in order to receive an A for the semester. But if you get an A first quarter and a B second quarter, you need an A on your semester exam in order to receive an A for the semester. In order to figure out your semester grade given your quarter 1 and quarter 2 grades, you can use our semester grade calculator above. Change your quarter 1, quarter 2, and semester exam grades in order to find out your semester grade. This calculator also works for second semester. Just replace quarter 1 with quarter 3, quarter 2 with quarter 4, and semester exam with final exam.

In case you're wondering how your semester grade is calculated, Palm Beach Schools use the following weights. Quarter 1 makes up 40% of your semester grade, quarter 2 makes up 40% of your semester grade, and the semester exam makes up 20% of your semester grade. An A is a 4.0, a B is a 3.0, a C is a 2.0, a D is a 1.0, and an F is a 0.0. If your overall average is 3.5 or higher, your semester grade is an A. If your overall average is 2.5 or higher, your semester grade is a B. If your overall average is 1.5 or higher, your semester grade is a C. If your overall average is 0.5 or higher, your semester grade is a D. Anything less than 0.5 counts as an F. There's another important rule that says that if you receive an F in two of the three grades (quarter 1, quarter 2, semester exam), then you receive an F for the semester.
